Celebrations
The war of the department stores is on at the moment. David Jones v's Myer. It's spring/summer fashion parades at ten paces! They are celebrating new season fashion shows and their own cache of designers. Spring is being celebrated by Miranda, Jen and a bevy of other gazelle-like models, each more long limbed than the one before.
We've seen all this before as this is at least a bi-annual event for David Jones and Myer - but they are both celebrating in style. The Veuve Clicquot was on ice at David Jones for the fashion faithful earlier this week and Myer's launch is bound to be just as glamorous.
In my own business, I also have been celebrating. We launched our Business Coaching division (also in style) at a corporate box at the races and I revelled in the opportunity to dress up and enjoy our client's company for the day. So much fun.
What struck me is that in my 8 years in business, how little I have celebrated. Particularly with my clients - who I like, so why not include them!? Sure in my personal life there have been fantastic celebrations. Sometimes annual, sometimes seasonal and sometimes simply because a new frock or a pair of heels needs to be worn! However, when it comes to celebrating business achievements I'm a little gun shy.
I'm sure I'm not alone in this. Maybe that's because as Aussies we are taught to fly under the radar and not be a tall poppy. Maybe it has something to do with my natural introvertness. Whatever the reason, surely there has to be more occasions to pop the champagne cork!
So this marks the start of more celebrating. More marketing achievements. David Jones and Myer have season driven reasons to launch and celebrate but surely we as business owners need to take a leaf from their book and start ringing our own bells (cue Collette music for those old enough to understand...).
I know this is a small diversion from the blog path but celebrating is an important diversion. We work hard as business owners. Celebrations don't need to be costly but they should be shared. Whether it is with colleagues, clients, friends and/or family, make a point of acknowledging your achievements. Maybe it's a launch of a new division like me, maybe it's 5 years in business, maybe it's landing a new client or maybe it's overcoming a would-be catastrophe to see another day.
Celebrate it.
Being in business can be tough so let's start celebrating our wins together. Of course if your celebrations can include glamour and the sound of a champagne cork I think it is always a much better thing!
